Governor Soludo Recognizes Four New Traditional Rulers in Anambra

In a move aimed at strengthening community leadership and reinforcing cultural heritage, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has officially recognized four newly elected traditional rulers. The formal recognition ceremony took place at the Government House in Awka on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, where the monarchs received certificates of recognition from the state government.

The new traditional rulers are:

  • Igwe Chinonso Ezeokafor of Ikenga
  • Igwe Augustine Chinedum Emelobe (Ezeokpoko II) of Oba
  • Igwe Sunday Emmanuel Ozoemena (Oranyelu I) of Ifite Anam
  • Igwe Ifeanyi Okonkwo of Ichi

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Soludo emphasized that traditional leadership remains vital to the development of Anambra’s communities. He made it clear that traditional rulers are not political appointees, but leaders chosen by their people through established customs and community constitutions.

"You are the custodians of our culture, history, and values. Your authority comes from your people and not from the government. You must lead with honesty, humility, and integrity," Soludo said.

He encouraged the monarchs to play active roles in promoting peace, unity, and progress within their domains. Soludo also stressed the need for traditional institutions to work hand-in-hand with the government, especially in tackling issues like youth restiveness, drug abuse, and rural development.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, praised the transparent selection process and reaffirmed the state's support for traditional institutions. He noted that Soludo’s administration is committed to restoring dignity and responsibility to the role of traditional rulers.

In his vote of thanks, Igwe Ozoemena of Ifite Anam pledged that the new monarchs would serve their people faithfully, uphold traditions, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.

This recognition is a step forward in enhancing local governance and reaffirming the importance of culture and tradition in modern leadership across Anambra State.
