Nigeria Achieves Historic Win in African Fencing Championships

Nigeria’s women’s épée team has recorded a historic milestone at the 23rd African Fencing Championships held in Lagos, finishing among the top five teams for the first time ever. This achievement marks a new era for Nigerian fencing and signals a promising future for the sport in the country.

The team, made up of Somtochukwu Eribenne, Sara Idongesit, and Adebodunirin Thomas, delivered an impressive performance throughout the tournament. Despite losing to Algeria in the quarterfinals, the Nigerian side bounced back with determination, defeating Benin Republic 45–40 in the classification match to secure a fifth-place finish.

Adebodunirin Thomas described the victory as a significant “morale booster,” attributing their success to solid teamwork, consistent training, and the guidance of their coaching crew. The win reflects not only the talent of the athletes but also the steady growth of fencing as a competitive sport in Nigeria.

The African Fencing Championships featured top-tier teams across the continent, with Egypt dominating the medal table by clinching 11 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Despite Egypt’s dominance, Nigeria’s remarkable performance stood out, especially as the host country of this year’s event.

This milestone comes as a breath of fresh air for Nigerian sports, which often focus on football and athletics. It highlights the need for increased investment and support in lesser-known sports like fencing, where raw talent and passion are in abundance.

As the Nigerian fencing federation builds on this momentum, there’s hope that the nation will continue to rise in future continental and global tournaments. The women’s épée team has certainly set a new standard and inspired a new generation of young fencers.

With this historic feat, Nigeria has shown that it is ready to challenge for more podium finishes on the African fencing stage.
