Corruption in Customs: Officers Aiding Rice Smuggling into Lagos

🚨 Corruption in Customs: Officers Aiding Rice Smuggling into Lagos

By Luchiinter News | July 30, 2025

A shocking investigation by Sahara Reporters has uncovered how some officials of the Nigeria Customs Service are allegedly aiding large-scale smuggling of foreign rice into Lagos—for a fee of ₦250,000 per boat.

🛶 Secret Smuggling Routes

Smugglers are reportedly bringing rice into the country from Benin Republic through illegal waterways and creeks in Badagry, Ijegun, and Tin Can. Instead of stopping these illicit shipments, customs operatives are said to collect bribes and provide safe passage for the boats.

"Once you pay the fee, your boat moves freely—no one will stop you," a source told Sahara Reporters.

💸 Huge Economic Losses

This corrupt practice is causing serious economic damage—robbing the nation of customs revenue and flooding the market with foreign rice, to the detriment of local farmers struggling with high production costs.

Experts estimate that this smuggling ring is costing Nigeria billions of naira monthly, while also undermining the government’s food security efforts.

🏛️ Public Outcry

So far, the Nigeria Customs Service has not responded to the allegations. However, civil society groups are calling for urgent action and demanding a full investigation by anti-corruption agencies like EFCC and ICPC.

On social media, Nigerians are outraged, calling for mass suspensions and arrests. Many believe this is just a glimpse into the deep-rooted corruption in the nation’s border control system.

📢 Luchiinter’s Take

This scandal is more than just rice—it’s about accountability. If corrupt practices within Customs aren’t stopped now, Nigeria’s economy, food supply, and trust in government will continue to suffer.
