Nigerian Nurses Begin Nationwide Strike Over Poor Pay and Unsafe Conditions

Nigeria’s healthcare system is currently facing a major disruption as nurses across the country have embarked on a seven-day warning strike to protest poor working conditions, inadequate pay, and severe staff shortages.

The strike, which began on Tuesday, July 30, was declared by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) after several failed attempts to negotiate with the Federal Government.

“We’re Tired of Being Ignored” – Nurses Cry Out

According to the union, nurses in Nigeria are being overworked, underpaid, and constantly exposed to health risks due to a lack of protective equipment and poor hospital facilities.

“We can no longer stay silent while our welfare is neglected,” said one senior nurse at a government hospital in Lagos. “We are essential workers, but we are being treated like we don’t matter.”

Hospitals across the country are now struggling to function, with many operating at reduced capacity or referring patients to private clinics. Patients in critical condition are reportedly being turned away due to the absence of nurses in government hospitals.

What the Nurses Are Demanding

The union has listed the following key demands:

Government Yet to Respond

As of the time of writing, the Federal Ministry of Health is yet to issue a formal response to the strike. However, sources say emergency meetings are ongoing to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown health crisis.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed support for the nurses, urging the government to act swiftly before the strike cripples the healthcare sector further.

A Looming Indefinite Strike?

NANNM has warned that if the government fails to meet their demands within the seven-day window, the union will launch an indefinite strike, which could completely shut down public healthcare services nationwide.
