Nigeria has lost one of its seasoned statesmen, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78. His death was confirmed earlier today, marking the end of a remarkable political journey that spanned decades.

Born on July 28, 1947, in Benue State, Chief Ogbeh was widely respected for his intellect, humility, and dedication to national service. He first rose to prominence during the Second Republic, serving as Minister of Communications from 1982 to 1983. Over the years, he remained a strong voice in Nigerian politics, advocating for agricultural development, transparency, and economic reforms.

Chief Ogbeh is perhaps best remembered for his tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. During this period, he championed policies aimed at boosting local food production, reducing import dependence, and empowering farmers nationwide.

His political career also saw him serve as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005, where he played a pivotal role in shaping party policies and national discourse. Known for his eloquence and principled stance, Ogbeh often spoke out on governance issues, earning him both respect and criticism.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country. Politicians, colleagues, and citizens have described him as “a patriot,” “a man of integrity,” and “a true servant of the people.” Many also recalled his deep knowledge of literature, history, and culture, which enriched his public engagements.

Chief Ogbeh’s passing leaves a gap in Nigeria’s political and intellectual landscape. He is survived by his family, who have requested privacy as they mourn this great loss. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
