✈️🚆Nigeria’s Transport and Aviation Sector Gets Major Boost

Nigeria’s transport and aviation sectors are undergoing significant changes in 2025, aimed at improving connectivity, safety, and economic growth. From new airlines to major infrastructure upgrades, the country is making bold moves to modernize travel for its citizens.

A major highlight is the launch of Enugu Air, a new state-owned airline operating from Enugu State. It joins Ibom Air as the second state-backed airline in the country. Enugu Air aims to boost local aviation and provide better access for the South East region.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) recently suspended two ValueJet pilots over safety violations, emphasizing a renewed focus on airline accountability and passenger safety. In a related move, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has introduced draft safety regulations to improve standards across aviation, rail, and maritime sectors.

In terms of infrastructure, Lagos continues to lead with its rail transit expansion. The Blue Line and Red Line are now operational, transporting thousands daily, while the Green Line is in the design phase. These metro projects are expected to reduce congestion and support economic activities.

The federal government also launched the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, with construction already underway on the initial 47.5 km segment. Funded by a $747 million syndicated loan, the project aims to link major coastal cities and improve trade routes.

Additionally, the government’s push to shift transportation to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is ongoing. This initiative, aimed at reducing fuel costs and emissions, targets over one million vehicle conversions in three years. However, adoption has been slow due to limited infrastructure.

With these combined efforts, Nigeria’s transport and aviation landscape is poised for growth. However, experts stress the need for strong implementation, safety oversight, and public awareness to ensure long-term impact.
