Super Falcons Defeat South Africa to Reach WAFCON Final

In a thrilling semi-final clash at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria’s Super Falcons emerged victorious, defeating the Banyana Banyana of South Africa 2–1 to book a place in the tournament final.

The match, held in Casablanca, Morocco, showcased the Super Falcons' resilience and tactical brilliance. Nigeria took the lead in the 28th minute through Uchenna Kanu, who capitalized on a defensive error to slot the ball past South Africa’s goalkeeper. The Falcons doubled their lead early in the second half when Michelle Alozie struck from a tight angle after a superb solo run down the flank.

South Africa, known for their physical style and attacking flair, fought back and pulled one back in the 74th minute through Thembi Kgatlana. However, the Nigerian defense held firm despite intense pressure in the closing minutes.

Coach Randy Waldrum praised the team’s fighting spirit, highlighting how the players maintained their composure even as South Africa pushed hard for an equalizer. "We knew it was going to be tough," he said. "South Africa are a great team, but our girls showed why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football."

President Bola Tinubu congratulated the team shortly after the match, urging them to go all the way and bring home a record 10th WAFCON title. He commended their dedication and called them “true ambassadors of Nigerian resilience and talent.”

The Super Falcons now await the winner of the Morocco vs. Cameroon semi-final. With this victory, Nigeria not only secured a place in the final but also sent a strong message to the rest of Africa—they are back and ready to reclaim their crown.

A Nigerian woman, identified as @dunchichi on Twitter, has been reportedly sentenced to a one-year jail term by the United Arab Emirates government for a social media post, showing how some Nigerian nationals were illegally detained at Dubai international airport.  On August 31, Lar had taken to her  Twitter  page to share photos and videos of herself and other people she identified as Nigerians being detained at the Dubai international airport. The development marks a major move by Nigerian authorities to uphold data privacy and ensure organizations are held accountable for mishandling personal data. The NDPC’s investigation revealed that MultiChoice was involved in what it described as " intrusive data processing " practices. These included collecting and handling the personal data of both subscribers and non-subscribers without proper consent.
