PDP suspends ex-Abia Reps member, Abonta for alleged anti-party activities

Danjuma, Christian Elders Back Obi, Say Nigeria Needs New Leaders

  The National Christian Elders Forum, led by former Defence Minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), and other elder statesmen, on Tuesday, endorsed Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of Saturday’s poll. The NCEF said this year’s presidential poll must produce a leader that will ensure national reconciliation and unity, which will in turn lead to socioeconomic prosperity for Nigeria.   A 6.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Monday in Turkey’s southern province of Hatay, the hardest hit by a February 6 tremor which left more than 41,000 dead in the country, the disaster response agency AFAD said. The quake hit the town of Defne at 8:04 pm (1704 GMT) and was strongly felt by AFP teams in Antakya and Adana, 200 kilometres (300 miles) to the north. An AFP journalist reported scenes of panic, adding that the new tremors raised clouds of dust in the devastated town. Two new earthquakes shook TĂĽrkiye's Hatay province near the Syrian border, just two weeks after a pair of major earthquakes in the area occurred on Feb. 6. According to Turkey disaster management, AFAD, the epicenter of the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.4 was the Defne district. It took place at around 8:04 p.m. local time (5:04 p.m. GMT), at a depth of 16.7 kilometers (10.4 miles). Body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu will arrive in his homeland Ghana today after his tragic death in Turkey earthquake

  The body of former Chelsea and Newcastle player Christian Atsu is being flown home to Ghana. The Ghanaian footballer was found dead on Saturday following the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria. In a statement released on Sunday morning, Ghana's foreign ministry said: 'The Government of Ghana is making arrangements to receive the mortal remains of the late Christian Atsu, a former Black Stars player. The remains will be accompanied by his family and Ghana's Ambassador to Turkiye on a Turkish airlines flight and will arrive in Accra at 7:40pm, Sunday 19th February 2023.' The ministry confirmed that Atsu's brother and sister were present when his body was recovered.   The 31-year-old had been missing since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that took place in the early hours of the morning of February 6, his agent confirmed on Saturday that Atsu's body had been discovered under the rubble.   Former aide to First Lady, Aisha Buhari,  Zainab Kassim, has sued her for N100m in damages over alleged illegal detention and assault.  The former Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the First Lady filed a suit for the enforcement of her fundamental rights against Aisha Buhari as she alleged that some Department of State Service officers acting on the orders of the First Lady allegedly abducted her and took her to the Presidential Villa where she was severely assaulted, dehumanised and abused. O ther respondents in the case include the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services. Kassim alleged that the assault was carried out with the support of officers of the DSS and Police after she deleted her posts on social media. Five gunmen and one police officer killed in Anambra police station

  No fewer than six people have been confirmed dead following a gun battle that took place on Sunday morning, February 19, at a  police station in Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The Nation reported that a resident of the area said the hoodlums came in their numbers and were dressed in “dark” clothing during the attack that occurred around 5:58am.  The resident said;  “The hoodlums arrival to the station followed a gun fire exchange between them and police officers at the station. We heard gun fire. It was intense. We also saw vehicles at the police station burning. “The gun fire exchange resulted in the death of one police officer and two of the attackers were killed.   Italian police has arrested a Nigerian woman for allegedly forcing young women and girls who arrive from Nigeria, into prostitution by using voodoo locally know as ‘juju,’ as a threat. The suspect who is believed to be the ‘Madame’ of a sex trafficking ring was  arrested in the Puglia province of Foggia on Tuesday, police confirmed in a statement on Friday, February 17, 2023.  Flying squad police in the Sicilian city of Siracusa, in collaboration with police in Foggia, have carried out an operation to arrest a Nigerian woman living in Foggia. The arrest warrant was issued by a preliminary investigations judge (GIP) on February 8 in Catania, Sicily. The suspect, who is in pre-trial custody, allegedly organized a prostitution ring, recruiting young women in Nigeria and forcing them to work as prostitutes in Italy, according to investigators. Obasanjo’s In-law Bags Seven-Year Imprisonment For Forgery

  Dr John Abebe, the in-law to the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has bagged seven years imprisonment for forgery and laundering. Abebe was sentenced after  it was established that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  arraigned Abebe, who is a younger brother to the late former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo for forgery. Abebe was first arraigned on July 26, 2018 on a four-count charge of forgery, fabricating evidence, using fabricated evidence and attempt to pervert the course of justice before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja.  An oil company, Statoil Nigeria Limited had on June 22, 2010, accused Dr Abebe of forgery. Statoil Nigeria Limited had alleged that the defendant forged parts of a Net Profit Interest Agreement (NPIA) dated November 30, 1995, which was drafted by British Petroleum (BP). Police Arrests Female Gunrunner, Kidnapper Of Own Mother, And Other Kidnappers In Zamfara

  A kidnapping syndicate and six members of the gang, including one who masterminded the kidnap of his mother has been arrested by Zamfara State Police Command. According to the state police commissioner, who spoke through the command’s spokesman, SP Mohammed Shehu, "police operatives had acted on intelligence gathered through community policing".    The suspects were identified as Thomas Yau of Maikarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Abdulsamad Mohammed, Bello Abdullahi and Abubakar Namadi. Pastor And Two Bricklayers Drown Inside Well In Osun

  Residents of Ojoro area of Owode Ede, Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State were thrown into mourning after three persons drowned in a well located at a construction site around 9:00am on Friday, February 17, 2023.  The deceased, identified as Adebayo Oluwasina,46, said to be a cleric, and two bricklayers, Lateef Adediran, 22, and Waliu Adediran,31, both siblings, met their death while attempting to recover a fetcher that fell into a well. It was gathered that Pastor Shina, the owner of the site, drowned while attempting to rescue the siblings. A resident of the community, said Waliu and Lateef were bricklayers engaged by Adebayo at his construction site. A teenage girl buried her newborn baby alive a few minutes after delivery in Ifa Ikot Okpon community, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state.  It was gathered that t he 18-year-old girl identified simply as Bright, did not want the baby after giving birth, and had to bury her in a shallow grave she dug in a garden inside a compound on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. Speaking to Premium Times, the girl who lives with her parents in a rented apartment, claimed that she did not know she was pregnant until the moment she gave birth.  However, from what her father, Okon Ekpenyong and others, who are familiar with the incident, said, it appears she lied.
