PDP suspends ex-Abia Reps member, Abonta for alleged anti-party activities

INEC Urges Registered Voters To Participate In Saturday’s Mock Accreditation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged registered voters in the 436 designated Polling Units (PUs) nationwide to participate in the Saturday mock accreditation with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu   ,  made the call when he received a delegation of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), led by its President, Mr Anthony Banbury, in Abuja on Monday. Yakubu also urged registered voters yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to use the opportunity of the extension of the deadline to collect their cards. BREAKING: Banks Will Still Accept Old Notes After Deadline – Emefiele Tells Reps

The Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele has said that Nigerians with old notes can still deposit them at commercial banks even after the February 10 deadline. Emefiele declared this on Tuesday while appearing before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee. It would be recalled that the lawmakers had accused Emefiele of breaching section 20 of the CBN act. According to the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, the CBN Act mandates commercial banks to accept old notes. “After the expiration date, such naira notes changed will no longer be legal tender but it also says that even five months, three months, or two months after, even in June, all the old notes presented to the bank shall be redeemed by the bank,” Mr Gbajabiamila had said in a speech on Thursday.   An unidentified operative of Ebubeagu security outfit, has allegedly been shot dead by a colleague, one Ajasm Aja, N1000 from a campaign rally that took place at Isu community in Onicha LGA headquarters of Ebonyi State. It was gathered that Aja was shot dead by his colleague resulting from a controversy that trailed the sharing formula of money given to them during the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign rally. It was gathered that the late Aja and his assailant were part of the Ebubeagu team drafted to Isu community to provide security at the APC governorship rally in the area. Federal High Court sitting in Abuja is set to deliver a landmark judgment on Monday, January 30 in a suit seeking the removal of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), from office over alleged illegalities in the 2019 presidential election. The judgment billed to be delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo would also resolve a request seeking to stop the conduct of the 2023 presidential election scheduled for February 25. BREAKING: CBN Extends Deadline For Use Of Old Naira Notes

  The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on Sunday extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes. Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, who spoke to journalists on Sunday morning 29th of January, said he had the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari for the extension. In a press statement issued on Sunday, Emefiele said the new deadline is now February 10, 2023. However, Nigerians will still be able to deposit their old notes directly with the CBN until February 17, 2023 described as “grace period”. Nigerians had been complaining about the inability to swap their old notes for the new designs as the January 31 deadline loomed. Although banks are working through the weekend to swap the notes, there are widespread complaints about scarcity, with people in the rural areas the most hit. The CBN previously said it would not extend the deadline.   The death toll from Nigerian Air force accidental bomb discharge that killed a group of herders on Tuesday night in Nasarawa State has risen to 56, sources have confirmed. The bomb explosion took place in Rukubi, a village on the border between Nasarawa and Benue States. According to Governor Abdullahi Sule, on Thursday after a meeting with the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore led by its National President, Alhaji Abubakar Bello-Bodejo, in Government House, Lafia while briefing newsmen said there were over 40 casualties. “We now have approximately 40 people that were killed,” he had said. He explained that the rumour earlier was that the air force carried out the bombing, but stated that there was no air force plane that flew above the area. Environmentalists, tourists and residents have reacted over the killing of chimpanzees in the Edumanom Forest Reserve, in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Photos of hunters boasting of killing and selling chimpanzees to interested locals who eventually used them for pepper soup surfaced on facebook.  One Ebiowei recently shared photos of ''Chimpanzee meat pepper soup'' which he washed down with yoghurt.  "Gunned down by a hunter in the forest today at Nembe, Bayelsa state.   The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a mother of two, Mrs. Charity Upev for allegedly beating her 10-year-old stepson, Fanen, to death over a missing piece of meat. The incident happened on Monday, January 23, 2023, along the popular Abu King Shuluwa Way near the international market, behind Deeper life camp in Makurdi, the state capital.  It was gathered that the suspect was apprehended after her neighbours reported the issue to the ‘E Division’ of the State Police Command. Zamfara police arrest 8 suspected bandits, recovers firearms, others.

Eight suspects have been arrested by the Zamfara State Police Command over banditry-related offences, criminal conspiracy, robbery and fraud. The police spokesman, S P Mohammed Shehu while communicating to newsmen at the State Police headquarters in Gusau said 15 locally fabricated firearms were also recovered from the suspects. ”One hundred and forty-six rounds of AK47 ammunitions, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and the sum of one million Naira were also recovered. Shehu said the onslaught against bandits has resulted in the arrest of over two hundred and fifty suspects and recovery of arms and ammunition, such as AK 47, AK 49, Rocket launchers, RPGs, GPMGs, Lar and other high calibre of sophisticated rifles. US announces visa ban on Nigerians undermining democracy

  The United States government has announced a visa ban on Nigerians accused of undermining democracy, noting that this was part of the action to advance democracy and tackle corruption in Nigeria.   US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, January 25, said while the names of the those affected by the ban won't be revealed, it is however, part of the action to advance democracy and tackle corruption in Nigeria. Blinken also said some family members of those barred from the US may also be subjected to the same restriction.
