Police Appeal For Calm As Communal Clash Looms Between Osun Communities

The Osun State Police Command has appealed to indigenes of Ilobu and Ifon Orolu communities to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their hands over the killing of one Sodiq Alamu.

It was reported that 28 year old Alamu was killed along Opapa village in Ilobu on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

Alamu hailed from Aganna compound in Ilobu, Irepodun local government area of Osun State.

The Commissioner of Police, Patrick Kehinde Longe in a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that the police was aware of the incident and assured that investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances which led to Alamu’s death.

While revealing that the police was aware of clandestine meetings by some groups of people who are plotting to cause mayhem over the development, Longe added that he has been having meetings with the Olobu of Ilobu and relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace reigns in the area.

The statement added, “The Osun State Police Command is using this medium to inform the good people of the State especially, the residents of Ilobu and Ifon in Irepodun and Orolu local governments area that the Police Command is aware of the report of the incident of the death of one Sodiq Alamu about 28 years of age along Opapa village in Ilobu and therefore passionately appeal to the residents of both communities (Ilobu & Ifon) and its environs to remain calm as investigation has immediately commenced to unraveled the circumstances that led to the death of the young man.

“Also, the Command is aware of clandestine meetings being held by some individuals/groups of people to cause mayhem within the communities.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Kehinde Longe since the report of the incident has been having meetings with Olobu of Ilobu, Oba Ashiru Olaniyan and other relevant stakeholders to appeal to their subjects to remain peaceful and not to take law into their hands as the Police Command will not relent until the circumstances is unraveled and suspect (s) are brought to book.”

Residents of Ilobu and Ifon-Osun towns, in Irepodun and Orolu LGAs of Osun State, respectively, have been at loggerheads over ownership of a land located at Opapa village, on the boundary between the two communities.

The communities are currently in court over the issue.

Earlier, the Ilobu Asake Development Union, IDU, had accused the Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji, and Prince Jide Akinyooye, of having a hand in Alamu’s killing.

This allegation was contained in a statement signed by Tairu Babatunde, the Public Relations Officer of the union and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

IDU thereafter called on Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke to raise up to the occasion so as to avert breakdown of law and order.

While requesting security agencies to immediately arrest, investigate and charge the duo to court for Alamu’s murder, IDU maintained that the step will restore the confidence on the security architecture as residents and indigenes of Ilobu were now living in panic.

According to the statement, “After touring all media houses and granting press conferences to issue threats on the lives of the people of Ilobu, Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji and a Prince of Ifon-Osun, Jide Akinyooye have finally carried out their threats by killing an indigene of Ilobu identified as Sodiq of Aganna’s compound in the early hours of Saturday, September 16, 2023.

“The whole world will recall that Jide Akinyooye was live on a radio programme on Friday, September 15, 2023, where he was laying unsubstantiated claims on Opapa and Gbere. He also reissued threats and sent messages of war on peace loving people of Ilobu.

“It will not be surprising that less than 24 hours after, Akinyooye and Oyetunji have carried out their threats by killing an innocent Sodiq, who was only doing his farming business at Opapa.

“Sodiq was declared missing by his family members on Friday evening after he had left home for the farm on Friday morning. His corpse was found on Saturday morning with bullet injuries on his back. A team of police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Ilobu have removed the corpse.

“We’re concerned that Akinyooye that has been telling the world that there’s a case at the Appeal court, has resorted to violence, killing and maiming of our people. “
