Professor Nasiru Hassan Wagini: The Nigerian Professor Who Sells Vegetables

Image
In a country where many graduates struggle with unemployment and societal pressure to secure white-collar jobs, Professor Nasiru Hassan Wagini stands out as a powerful example of humility, resilience, and enterprise. A lecturer at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, Professor Wagini is not only a respected academic in the field of Plant Physiology but also a regular vegetable seller at Batsari market in Katsina State. Born into a farming family, Wagini never lost his connection to agriculture. Despite rising through the academic ranks, he chose not to abandon his farming roots. Every week, he sets up a stand to sell vegetables and soup ingredients—known locally as kayan miya. This choice is not born of necessity alone but also of purpose. 2025 Hajj: NAHCON Seeks Quick Return of Nigeria Pilgrims

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has intensified efforts to ensure the swift and safe return of Nigerian pilgrims who participated in the 2025 Hajj exercise in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As the spiritual rites of Hajj come to a close, the commission is focusing on logistics and coordination with key stakeholders to guarantee a seamless return process for all Nigerian pilgrims.

NAHCON Chairman, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi, emphasized the commission’s commitment to a timely airlift of pilgrims back to Nigeria, avoiding unnecessary delays that could affect the comfort and well-being of pilgrims. He noted that the return flights are scheduled to commence on June 19 and will continue in phases until all pilgrims are brought home.

In preparation for this, NAHCON is working closely with the approved airlines—Air Peace, Max Air, Flynas, and others—to ensure that flights are available and well-coordinated. Additionally, the commission is collaborating with state pilgrim welfare boards and other stakeholders to ensure that necessary documentation and health clearances are in place for a smooth transition.

NAHCON has also put measures in place to monitor the welfare of pilgrims, especially the elderly and those with special needs, during the return process. Medical teams and consular officials are on standby in Saudi Arabia to assist where necessary.

This year’s Hajj operations have seen remarkable improvements in coordination and organization, despite challenges such as visa delays and initial fears of accommodation hitches. NAHCON has reassured families back home that their loved ones are safe and will be returned according to schedule.

As the return phase begins, the commission continues to urge pilgrims to remain orderly and cooperative, promising a safe and dignified return for all Nigerian pilgrims from the holy land.
