Air Peace Expands UK Reach with New Heathrow Slot

Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, is taking a bold step forward in expanding its international footprint by securing a coveted slot at London’s Heathrow Airport. This development marks a significant milestone in the airline's mission to enhance connectivity between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and to give Nigerian travelers greater access to top-tier global aviation hubs.

Since launching its Lagos to London route via Gatwick Airport in March 2024, Air Peace has recorded impressive success, with over 130,000 passengers served in its first year. While Gatwick has offered a strong gateway into the UK, the airline has always had its sights set on Heathrow—widely regarded as one of the busiest and most strategic airports in the world.

The Heathrow slot acquisition represents more than convenience. It’s a power move in the global aviation space, ensuring Nigerian travelers enjoy direct access to central London and enhanced connections to Europe, the Americas, and beyond. For Air Peace, it also signals growing influence and recognition in international aviation.

Air Peace CEO, Allen Onyema, has been vocal about the airline’s determination to secure a primary airport slot, citing the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UK. He emphasized the need for fair treatment, just as British carriers operate out of Nigeria’s key airports.

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Aviation, also supported Air Peace’s efforts, pushing for fair reciprocity and urging UK authorities to allow Nigerian carriers equal access. With the Heathrow slot now in view, the focus shifts to operational logistics and enhancing the passenger experience.

This move not only strengthens Air Peace’s brand but also puts Nigeria on the map as a strong aviation player. It is a step toward greater continental representation in international air travel—and a win for Nigerian travelers at home and abroad.
