ADC Denies Coup Plot Against Tinubu's Government: “We’re Politicians, Not Soldiers”
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly denied recent allegations suggesting the party is involved in a plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu. This statement comes amidst growing political tension and accusations that opposition voices are being unfairly targeted under the guise of national security concerns.
Speaking through its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated. Abdullahi stated, “We are not soldiers, we are politicians. We don’t have bullets; we only have ballots.” According to him, the ADC remains committed to democratic values and has no intention of taking power through unconstitutional means.
The party believes the coup allegation is a deliberate attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to silence political dissent and weaken credible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ADC described the move as an alarming trend in Nigeria’s political landscape where opposition parties are frequently accused of subversive acts without concrete evidence.
“The government appears to be looking for an excuse to clamp down on opposition parties,” Abdullahi warned. He emphasized that the ADC, along with other coalition parties, is focused on providing Nigerians with an alternative leadership vision through legal and democratic processes.
Observers note that this development may further strain the fragile relationship between Nigeria’s ruling party and opposition groups. Many civil society groups have also raised concerns about the shrinking space for free political expression in the country.
The ADC reiterated its commitment to peaceful political engagement and urged security agencies to avoid being used as instruments of political intimidation. As the nation moves closer to another election cycle, the party called on all stakeholders to uphold democratic norms and protect Nigeria’s hard-earned democratic gains.
