Keyamo Accuses Atiku of Illegal Use of Nigeria’s Coat of Arms
The political landscape in Nigeria has once again been stirred following a serious allegation by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, against former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Keyamo has accused Atiku of the unauthorized use of Nigeria’s official coat of arms for personal and political purposes, calling it a violation of the law.
In a public statement that has since sparked widespread reaction, Keyamo claimed that Atiku’s latest political communication materials feature the Nigerian coat of arms, a national symbol that is legally protected and reserved solely for government use. According to Keyamo, this act is not only a breach of the law but also an attempt to mislead Nigerians into believing that Atiku still holds official government authority or endorsement.
Quoting the laws governing the use of the coat of arms, Keyamo insisted that Section 10 of the Coat of Arms Act clearly prohibits individuals or organizations from using the national symbol without express permission from the government. He called on security agencies and the Ministry of Justice to investigate and take appropriate action.
The accusation has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some view it as a calculated political move by the APC-led administration to silence opposition figures ahead of future elections, while others agree that national symbols must be respected and protected from misuse.
Atiku’s camp, as of the time of this report, is yet to release an official response to the allegation. However, political analysts say this development could add another layer of tension to the already heated political atmosphere in the country.
Whether this results in legal action or fades into another political controversy remains to be seen. What is certain is that the use of national symbols is no small matter, especially in Nigeria’s complex and sensitive political terrain.
