Nationwide SIM Services Disruption Hits Nigerians Amid NIMC Platform Migration
Nigerians across the country are currently experiencing a major disruption in SIM-related services, following the migration of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to a new digital identity verification platform. This development has caused unexpected technical issues, forcing mobile network operators to suspend services such as SIM swaps, replacements, activations, and number porting.
According to a statement from the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), the transition has created temporary difficulties in verifying users’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) through the new system. As a result, all telecom providers, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile, have been affected.
The suspension is particularly frustrating for subscribers who urgently need to retrieve lost lines, change devices, or port their numbers. The development also impacts people who rely on SIM cards for access to banking, business communications, and other digital services.
ALTON advised Nigerians to postpone any SIM-related requests until the technical challenges are resolved. The group assured the public that it is working closely with NIMC, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue and restore normal service as quickly as possible. However, no specific date has been provided for when services will resume.
This disruption highlights the critical importance of seamless coordination between telecom operators and government agencies, especially when it comes to identity infrastructure. While the new NIMC platform is expected to improve identity verification and security in the long run, the poor implementation process has caused widespread inconvenience.
Nigerians are advised to stay patient and await further updates from their network providers. In the meantime, many users are expressing concern over the lack of contingency measures and the absence of a clear timeline for resolution. For now, millions remain disconnected from essential mobile services.
