Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Growing Debt Crisis

Residents of Pota community in Badagry, Lagos State, are raising alarm over the shocking state of their only primary health centre, now overrun by snakes. The Pota Primary Health Centre, which serves as a maternity clinic and treatment point for locals, has become a symbol of decay and danger, with health workers claiming they have killed more than 20 snakes in recent weeks.
According to reports by Sahara Reporters, the health centre is without basic facilities like electricity and water. Nurses and midwives are left with no choice but to conduct deliveries using candlelight or phone torches, putting both mother and child at serious risk.
A staff member who spoke anonymously said the situation is dire. “We deliver babies under candlelight and kill snakes almost every other day. The environment is not safe. The beds are rusted, the roof is leaking, and snakes crawl in from holes under the floor.”
Community members describe the centre as a “death trap” and are calling on the Lagos State Government and the Badagry Local Government Council to intervene immediately. Despite repeated complaints and petitions, no concrete action has been taken, leaving the facility to deteriorate further.
Photos circulating online show a collapsed ceiling, broken windows, and snake burrows within the hospital premises. The maternity ward, in particular, has been described as “uninhabitable,” yet it remains in use due to a lack of alternatives.
As public outrage grows, residents fear for the lives of pregnant women and children relying on the centre. Many are now forced to seek help in faraway towns or turn to traditional birth attendants, further endangering maternal health outcomes in the area.
This alarming situation calls for immediate government intervention, before tragedy strikes.
