Atiku wins as court upholds consolidation of petitions against Tinubu’s election

  The Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC has upheld the position of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar on the consolidation of the three petitions challenging the qualifications and declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election. The Court in the pre-hearing session report presented on Tuesday by Justice Stephen Jonah Ada announced the consolidation of the three petitions instituted by Atiku, Peter Obi of the Labour Party LP and the Allied People’s Movement APM. The Court agreed with Atiku’s lawyers that given the time-bound nature of the petitions, especially for expeditious hearing purposes, it was proper and appropriate to merge them in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. Buhari, Osinbajo, Government Get N651m Hardship Allowance

  As many Nigerians continue to wallow in hardship, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, and their deputies may have enjoyed about N651.2m hardship allowance in the last eight years the Buhari regime, according to findings by The PUNCH. The type of allowance, which is 50 per cent of the annual basic salary, is also enjoyed by judges in the country. However, The PUNCH report focuses on the amount allocated for the president, vice president, state governors, and their deputies, according to a document obtained from the website of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission. The RMAFC document disclosed that the president is entitled to N1.76m annually as a hardship allowance. This means that within a period of eight years, Buhari would have earned N14.08m as hardship allowance. FG To Spend N22.44 Billion On Feeding Prisoners

  The Federal Government has disclosed that a total of N22.4 billion would be spent on feeding  prison  inmates across correctional centres in the country. The proposed expenses are already budgeted for in the 2023 Appropriation Act. Speaking at a two-day High Conference on Decongestion and Corrections Management held in Abuja, the nation’s capital city, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior,  Dr Shuaib Belgore , highlighted that there has been a steady rise in the population of the custodial centres with at least 80% of the inmates awaiting trial. According to him, there are 244 custodial centres nationwide, with a 75,507-inmate population, thereby leading to 82 of them being overcrowded. The total number of male inmates is 73,821 and female 1,686 female inmates, he noted. Barely a month ago, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed that no fewer than 3,298 inmates across the custodial centres in Nigeria are on death row. Nnamdi Kanu To Remain In Detention As Supreme Court Adjourns Case Till September

  The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing in the suit filed by the Indigenous People of Biafra demanding the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to September 14.'  The group had approached the court on November 3, 2022, with a lawsuit challenging the continued detention of its leader who was arrested in July 2021.  The self-determination agitator had filed an appeal at the apex court against the Court of Appeal’s verdict stopping his release from the DSS custody. Kanu appealed against the Oct. 28, 2022 decision of the appellate court, which stayed the execution of its earlier order acquitting him of all charges and directing his release from the custody of the secret police. Prior to the hearing, Kanu’s Special Counsel had urged the Supreme Court to ensure justice in the trial of his client. 75-year-old man arraigned for forcing Anambra widow to drink water used to wash corpse of her husband's nephew

  The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned a 75-year-old man, Albert Eligbue, for allegedly forcing a widow, Patricia Eligbue, to drink water used to bathe the corpse of her husband's nephew.  Eligbue, from Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state, was arraigned in the Children, Sexual and Gender- Based Violence Court in Awka, the state capital on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.  During court proceedings, the prosecutor, Inspector Onyema Ayogu told the court that the defendant was accused of forcing a widow and sister-in-law to drink water used to wash the corpse of her late brother-in-law as proof of her innocence over his death. Ayogu said the defendant was facing five charges, including conspiracy to commit felony and assault, an offence punishable under sections 495(a) and 190 of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. 11 revised laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991.   The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has once again called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.   Olasunkanmi Falola Ahmed, aka Stainless, has alleged a threat to his life and his family by the Special Assistant to the Governor of Ogun State on Student Matters, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez Amoo. Olasunkanmi, a former Chairman of the Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ogun State, in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, called on the people of Ogun State and Nigeria at large to save his life. The former student leader alleged that the governor's aide vowed to end his life and his family members’ lives. He accused Adeyemi of using cult members to roam about tertiary institutions, beating, harassing and attacking whoever doesn’t accept his instructions. Road to Wole Soyinka train station in Ogun collapses, residents cry for help

  Various portions of the road leading to the Wole Soyinka Train Station in Ogun State have collapsed, DAILY POST reports. The Wole Soyinka Train Station is one of the 10 stations that make up the 156km Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail commissioned in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, when the state-of-the-art train station was completed by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, government did not take into cognisance, the need to fix the access road that goes to the station. Today, the road has become a nightmare to train users, who are now considering returning to the roads instead of teavelling to Lagos and Ibadan through the railway.
