Diphtheria Scare in Edo State: Calls for School Closure Amid Rising Cases

  Edo State is currently battling a public health scare as diphtheria cases emerge, raising concern among residents, health professionals, and civil society. With six confirmed cases and three reported fatalities, the outbreak has prompted urgent calls for preventive measures to contain further spread. Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the nose and throat, often fatal if left untreated. The Edo State Ministry of Health has confirmed the detection of both diphtheria and dengue fever, adding complexity to the state’s health response. So far, over 15 suspected diphtheria cases have been identified, with health officials moving swiftly to activate surveillance teams and conduct community sensitization. Police to invite Baale of Lagos community over a purported audio Recording Of Him Allegedly Threatening People Do Not Want To Vote For APC In 2023 Election

 


The police in Lagos state say it will be inviting the Baale of Gbaara community in Et-Osa local government area of Lagos state over a purported audio tape of him threatening members of the community who say they will not vote APC in the coming election.

In a the purported audio recording, a man who is alleged to be the Baale said all members of the community should vote APC in the elections and that if they do not, they should leave the community.

"We are ready to fight. Yes, I am not hiding it. I have narrated everything to you. In Nigeria, there is Lagos; in Lagos, there is Eti-Osa; within Eti-Osa, we have the Igbara community, and by the grace of God in Igbara today, we can make our decision. The people that will be friends with us, that will do business with us, are those with PVCs and are willing to vote for our party. Nothing short of that," he said in the audio.

“You want to vote for PDP or Labour Party? Not here! Elections have been coming and going, we have never done this before, we are doing this based on instructions” he said in the audio.

Confirming the audio to NAN, the Lagos Public Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin said the traditional ruler will be invited for questioning.


In a chat with LIB, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command is aware of the audio recording and will on Monday, February 13, invite the Baale for questioning. Intimidating voters will not be allowed. 

“Everyone should feel free to vote for the candidate of his or her choice.”
