Diphtheria Scare in Edo State: Calls for School Closure Amid Rising Cases

Nigeria’s political terrain is set for a shakeup as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other prominent figures, has initiated the process of registering a new political party – the All Democratic Alliance (ADA). The group recently submitted their application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed All Democratic Alliance is envisioned as a broad coalition of politicians from different political backgrounds, including former members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and other smaller parties. This new movement aims to harness widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians regarding insecurity, economic hardship, and the current state of governance.
Insiders say the ADA seeks to provide a credible and united platform for change, focusing on good governance, youth empowerment, and national unity. Atiku and El-Rufai, who have often found themselves at odds with their former parties’ internal dynamics, appear to be repositioning themselves for a stronger push toward the presidency.
The timing of the move is particularly significant. With the APC facing increasing criticism over its handling of security, inflation, and corruption, the formation of ADA could attract frustrated citizens and disenchanted party members looking for a new political home. Observers also believe that the new party could energize voter participation, especially among young Nigerians who are often skeptical of traditional political establishments.
However, not everyone is convinced. Some critics argue that the ADA is simply a recycled mix of old political actors who failed to make significant changes in the past. They caution that without clear ideological direction or fresh leadership, the party may struggle to gain the public’s trust.
Nonetheless, the formation of ADA has added a fresh dimension to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. If officially registered, the All Democratic Alliance could become a key player in the 2027 elections, potentially altering the balance of power and providing Nigerians with a new option at the polls.
