Keyamo Accuses Atiku of Illegal Use of Nigeria’s Coat of Arms

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has finally brought an end to the heated legal battle over the Edo State governorship election by affirming the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a ruling delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Lawal Garba, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The court held that the appeal lacked merit, upholding the earlier judgments of the election tribunal and Court of Appeal.
Ighodalo had contested the outcome of the September 2024 gubernatorial election, citing irregularities and overvoting in some polling units. However, the court ruled that the PDP failed to provide convincing evidence to support its claims, noting that only 395 of the 4,519 polling units were mentioned, and that testimony from just 19 witnesses was not enough to overturn the election results.
Reacting to the judgment, Ighodalo described it as a “robbery” and “a betrayal of the Edo people’s trust,” though he added that he accepts the court’s final decision. Former Governor Godwin Obaseki also expressed disappointment, warning that the ruling poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
On the other hand, Governor Okpebholo hailed the ruling as a victory for democracy and the people of Edo State. He called for unity and extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents, promising to focus on good governance and development.
President Bola Tinubu and other leaders also congratulated Okpebholo, urging him to deliver on his mandate.
With this judgment, all legal battles are now concluded, and the focus returns to governance. Edo people can now look forward to the next phase of leadership under Governor Okpebholo.
