Chimamanda Adichie Receives Chieftaincy Title In Hometown


The chieftaincy as a whole is one of the oldest continuously existing institutions in Nigeria and is legally recognized by its government.

Chieftaincy title is described as a status of symbol which elevates the bearer above his untitled age mates in traditional and community affairs.

These are titles conferred only on illustrious men and women who have distinguished themselves in one thing or the other.

These people through their philantropic disposition built roads, schools, church, market and other commendable developmental activities. Holding a chieftancy title in Igboland is a testimony of one's reputation in such community.

Some prominent members of society spend personal funds for rural development. The traditional ruler in such a domain and people in appreciation for the effort of the indigene might bestow on the son a chieftaincy title.

In some parts of Igbo land, women who have gone far in different aspect of life also get chieftancy title from either their community of birth or marriage.

In Igboland, before one could be considered worthy of any title, he or she must a person of high repute and without questionable character.

On 30th December, Popular writer, Chimamanda Adichie, was conferred with a chieftaincy title by her hometown, a recognition given for her contribution to Abba community.

The women's prize for fiction award winner, who hails from Abba in Anambra State, was on Friday honoured with the title of ‘Odeluwa Abba’ for her excellence and selfless contributions to the development of the land. 

The Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, amongst other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

A Facebook user, Uche Nworah, who shared photos from the ceremony, wrote, “Award-winning novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, was on Friday honoured by her native Abba hometown, Njikoka LGA, Anambra State, with the chieftaincy title of odelụwa (she who writes for the world).

This will attract more development and progress to Abba community and the entire state.
