Residents of Itashin community in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State have been thrown into panic following a disturbing incident involving wild elephants that strayed into farmlands and attacked a local farmer.
The invasion, which occurred during farming activities, left farmlands destroyed and one farmer seriously injured. The shocking development has raised concern among both residents and stakeholders, especially as human-wildlife conflicts continue to pose a threat to lives and food security in rural communities.
Raising the alarm during a recent plenary session in Abeokuta, Hon. Sola Adams, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly representing the area, reported that the wild elephants not only destroyed valuable crops but also attacked a community member. He described the situation as worrisome and called for urgent government intervention.
In response to the incident, Speaker Olakunle Oluomo called for calm and assured the public that the state government would collaborate with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Forestry, and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, to address the issue. He emphasized the need for a coordinated and sustainable approach to prevent future occurrences, while also ensuring the safety of both human lives and endangered wildlife species.
The lawmaker’s report also hinted that such incidents are not new, as previous elephant sightings and crop destruction have been recorded in some border communities between Ogun and Lagos States. However, the level of damage and threat to human life in the current case has sparked renewed calls for stronger conservation management and rural protection policies.
As the community seeks solutions, residents are urged to stay alert, avoid encroaching into deep forest paths, and report any unusual wildlife sightings to local authorities.
