ExxonMobil to Invest $1.5 Billion in Nigeria’s Deepwater Oilfields

Global energy giant ExxonMobil has announced plans to invest a massive $1.5 billion in Nigeria’s deepwater oilfields over the next two years. The investment will focus primarily on revitalizing the Usan oilfield, located offshore in block OML 138 in the Niger Delta. This move comes after the company divested some of its onshore assets, signaling a strategic shift toward deepwater exploration.

The company is expected to finalize the Field Development Plan (FDP) and reach a Final Investment Decision (FID) by Q3 2025, with capital deployment scheduled between Q2 2025 and 2027. This investment aligns with the Federal Government’s ambitious target to ramp up crude oil production to 2.4 million barrels per day by 2026.

According to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), this investment is a major boost to President Tinubu’s “Project 1 Million Barrels”, aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The Usan oilfield, which began production in 2012, is set to undergo an upgrade with the drilling of new wells and the installation of additional infrastructure.

ExxonMobil’s deepwater strategy also includes plans to accelerate development in the Owowo and Erha fields. These projects are expected to enhance Nigeria’s offshore production capabilities, generate employment, and increase government revenue through taxes and royalties.

Industry experts view this as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s oil sector, especially following recent regulatory reforms introduced under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The NUPRC has promised full regulatory support to ensure the success of this deepwater venture.

As Nigeria battles economic challenges, this $1.5 billion investment by ExxonMobil offers hope for job creation, improved energy output, and renewed investor confidence in Africa’s largest oil producer.
